Where Golden Flashes Found Forever

Whether it was a philosophy class in Bowman Hall or working together at Campus Bus Service, these 性福五月天 love stories turned Golden Flashes into lifelong partners

Robert and Alison Hoskinson

Robert, '00, and Alison, M.Ed. '10, Hoskinson

I started out going to 性福五月天 University at East Liverpool. I met my wife at 性福五月天 University at Salem.
She was attending The Ohio State University at the time, and I was attending the Kent Campus. We started dating, and she moved back to Columbiana, Ohio. I received my associate's degree from 性福五月天 Salem. Later on, my wife earned a master's degree at the Trumbull Campus, where she has been working for more than 20 years. I earned my Addiction Counseling Certification from 性福五月天 Trumbull as well. 性福五月天 has been a huge part of our life. Our daughter Paige talks about how she wants to attend 性福五月天 University someday. Go Flashes!

The Proposal and Marriage

We met at 性福五月天 Salem. We then got engaged at 性福五月天 Salem in 2003 in the exact spot where we met, and we even took our engagement photos there. When we married in 2004, we also took wedding pictures at 性福五月天 Salem campus.

My wife works at 性福五月天 Trumbull. I still attend 性福五月天 but had to not take classes time off after my mom passed away.

Douglas, '68, and Linda, '69, Smith

Douglas and Linda Smith

In October of 1966, my Alpha Chi Omega (AXO) sorority sister and Doug鈥檚 fraternity brother arranged for us to go on a blind date.

I lived in Beall Hall, and he lived in McDowell, which was very convenient. I remember meeting him in the lounge and watching movies. Of course, we were into the music scene downtown as well. We absolutely loved eating pizza at Montoni鈥檚 - greasy to the last bite!

The Proposal and Marriage

I don鈥檛 think there really was a proposal. It was just a certainty that we were going to get married. My engagement ring was his grandmother鈥檚 diamond, which made it extra special. We had a wonderful marriage for 37 years until his passing in December of 2005. I鈥檝e never even thought of remarrying because Doug was 鈥渢he one鈥.

We lived in many states after marrying, but always followed KSU news. We were able to attend one homecoming when we lived in Detroit. I'm going to be meeting with 10 AXO sisters in May for a mini reunion.鈥

Daniel and Micayla Berger

Daniel, '19, and Micayla, '18, M.A. '19, Berger

We met in 2016 while members of Alpha Phi Omega (APO) service fraternity and began dating in 2017.
We loved to attend 性福五月天 football games, Flash Fest and Kent Oktoberfest. We are so grateful to 性福五月天 for helping us find our soulmate.

The Proposal and Marriage

We got engaged in October 2020 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and got married Sept. 9, 2023, in downtown Akron, Ohio, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Our reception was in Kent at The Event on Sunnybrook. Our absolute favorite part of our wedding day was stopping at Ray鈥檚 Place in between our ceremony and reception to have Long Island iced teas with our bridal party.

We still frequently stop and walk around campus together when we're in the area to reminisce and see all the new changes happening around campus.鈥

Scott, '96, and Laurie, '98, Liechty

Scott and Laurie Liechty

Scott and I met while we both worked at the Campus Bus Service as drivers.

I started to notice him while we would pass each other driving. A friend of mine from nursing school who also drove mentioned my name to Scott. I would schedule my shifts so I would take over his route when he was done and be his relief driver. We would see each other at the student center often. On a Friday afternoon, we were both driving the stadium route, and my bus pulled up behind his during a layover. He got out of his bus to talk to me and asked me on a date. For our wedding, instead of a limo, we had a decorated campus bus.

My parents still live in Kent so we visit often. We have gone to sporting events as some of our close friends have children that play or played for Kent. We often go to dinner in Kent. I had absolutely the best time as a student at 性福五月天!鈥

Tierra and DeAndre Haynes

Tierra, '06, and DeAndre, '06, Haynes

Dre and I met during our freshman year in 2002.
After we graduated in 2006, we lived overseas for six years while he played basketball professionally.

The Proposal and Marriage

Dre proposed in 2009, and we were married in July of 2010. It was a surprise engagement with our closest family and friends present, and it caught me completely off guard. We were married July 31, 2010, and left to go back overseas two weeks later.

Dre coached basketball at Kent from 2012-2016, and I also came back to work there from 2013-2016. Kent will always be home for us.鈥

Tyler, '17, M.S. 鈥21, and Brandan, '16, Boggs

Tyler and Brandan

My husband Brandan and I met in 2014 on campus by accident.
We were in similar classes and had mutual friends but never ran into one another. One day, I was working on an architecture project, and Brandan was coming to hang out with our mutual friends at the place I lived. When we met, we instantly felt a connection and from that moment on, we鈥檝e been inseparable. We spent A LOT of time together on campus since that moment, and we quickly became very close, almost like we knew each other from a past life. We dated while we went through school and later got engaged and married a few years after that. 性福五月天 holds so many of our favorite memories we鈥檝e had as a couple. From classes together, to a cup of coffee at Jazzman鈥檚 Cafe and all of the other food on campus, to events for PRIDE and Homecoming, too! We also come back from time to time to walk around campus with our dogs and reminisce about the memories we had in each building on campus. We鈥檙e so thankful to have met one another on campus, and we have 性福五月天 to thank for that. We both graduated from our undergraduate degrees in Digital Sciences in 2017 and 2016 respectively. I then went back to school myself again from 2019 to 2021 for a master鈥檚 degree in User Experience Design.

The Proposal and Marriage

While our proposal and ceremony wasn鈥檛 on campus (but would have been amazing if it was), we got engaged in 2016, and Brandan used Teslas to propose to me as those were our favorite cars back then (we are avid car enthusiasts). We had a small ceremony in January of 2017 with family at our wedding, and we鈥檝e been married ever since!

We attend Homecoming and other events with alumni as we are able to while we live here in Cleveland. We also try to stay involved as we can with the LGBTQ+ community + organization from campus as well as they hold a special place in our hearts.

Alyssa and Robert Lempner

Alyssa, '15, M.Ed. 鈥20, and Robert, '15, M.Ed. 鈥21, Lempner

We met at a group interview in White Hall for the Early Childhood program.
We became the best of friends and eventually began dating. We had all of our classes together and student taught in the same districts. This was almost 10 years ago! Today we are both elementary teachers and loving our jobs! We had our first daughter in October 2022.

The Proposal and Marriage

We visited White Hall and reminisced on the days we had all of our classes together. We went out for a nice dinner after and to a lake near our home. Robert got a teaching position and proposed on the same day. It was double the excitement! We were married in July of 2019.

We both continued on to earn master鈥檚 degrees from Kent. We love visiting Kent and going out to lunch or dinner. We still walk the campus from time to time and always represent Kent with our KSU apparel!

Josh, '10, and Maria Cribbs

Josh and Maria Cribbs

Oh man, how I met my wife.
It was the annual Renaissance Ball at 性福五月天. The best dressed competition was going on at the time. It was the best dressed women, and I鈥檓 looking on stage, and I see this girl, who later became my wife. I didn't have the chance to talk to her though until I ran into Arica Kress, '03, my RA at the time, who was driving Maria home. They offered me a ride, and that was the first chance I had to speak to this girl. We went on a date, and eight months later, we got married.

The Proposal and Marriage

I proposed to her at my cousin鈥檚 wedding. I had to first ask my cousin if it was ok because I didn鈥檛 want to ruin her special day. She thought it was just the greatest idea to propose to my wife. So I put my wife on the spot and as soon as I came to her, she knew what I was doing. I got down on my knee, and she just couldn鈥檛 believe it and was in tears. Once I proposed to her, it was less than a month later that we were married. The mayor of Kent married us, and we got married on a pier, which we had run past every day together because we used to work out together.

How do you and your spouse stay connected to 性福五月天 as alumni?

My wife and I stay connected by going back to Kent as much as possible - Homecoming, basketball games and doing events in Kent. During the Browns games, I go to Water Street Tavern. I try to introduce myself and to give my services if needed to the president to make it easier to connect with not just the community but the students at Kent. I try to lend my services wherever it鈥檚 needed, whether it is for a homecoming game appearance or camps.

Jeffrey and Sandra Wyant

Jeffrey, '71, and Sandra, '73, Wyant

I met my future husband in a philosophy of law class in Bowman Hall.
It was the first night class either of us had ever taken and the first time either of us was ever late to a class. I walked in wearing my short skirt with my long brown hair to see Jeffrey sitting there with two other fellows. Normally, I would never ask if I was in the right classroom, but with just the four of us there, I did. My future husband kidded me and said 鈥淣o, it鈥檚 Poli Sci 101鈥. I happened to look at the blackboard where there was a message written that the class had moved to another room. So, I said 鈥淥h, you鈥檙e right. The class moved.鈥 The fellows never noticed the message. The guys got up, and we walked to the correct room with my future husband walking next to me. I sat behind my future husband and read his name on his book. Well, we ended up sitting together the next time.

The Proposal and Marriage

Jeffrey went on to Northwest School of Law while I finished my degree and graduated. We were married after Jeffrey finished law school. We had 41 years and two months of a very happy wonderful life together before Jeffrey passed in 2015.鈥

Larry, '71, 鈥73, M.Ed 鈥78, and Sandy, '75, Disbro

Larry and Sandy Disbro

I checked meal tickets at Prentice Hall when Sandy came through my line wearing a Lakeland CC T-shirt.
Lakeland is located in Mentor, Ohio, my hometown. I asked her if she was from Mentor. She was not, but we had several mutual friends, and we talked everyday when she came through my line. One thing led to another, and we became married Golden Flashes forever!

The Proposal and Marriage

I asked her Dad for Sandy鈥檚 hand, and he said 鈥測es鈥 if Sandy said 鈥測es!鈥 She did!
