Joseph (Joe) Driscoll is a senior majoring in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management, and he has found the perfect fit as an Adventure Center Specialist with 性福五月天 Recreation and Wellness Services. Joe has a strong passion for the outdoors and was drawn to the Adventure Center because it surrounds him with people who share similar interests and 鈥済et to spend their time doing what they love.鈥
What stands out most to Joe about his role is the constant variety. Whether he is facilitating paddleboarding, leading a kayaking program, or working in the rock-climbing area, no shift ever feels the same. The variety in his position keeps the job exciting and engaging and has allowed Joe to foster hands-on experience across a wide range of outdoor activities. Not only does RecWell keep him motivated academically, but it reinforced his passion for pursuing a career in recreation and outdoor programming.
Through RecWell, Joe has been able to build valuable professional connections. Many staff members at the Adventure Center are familiar with the recreation and outdoor industry and have shared insight into internship opportunities and encouragement. The community he鈥檚 surrounded by has helped him better understand the field and prepare him for life after graduation.
Additionally, Joe has developed a strong set of interpersonal and technical skills during his time at RecWell. On top of earning certifications as a paddleboarding instructor, he has enhanced skills in rock climbing and equipment management. Aside from technical skills, Joe explains the unique customer service experience he gets through team building. He can interact with patrons in settings that feel more personal and impactful.
Spending a lot of time at the Recreation Center, Joe feels he has positively influenced his academic life as he describes the area as a 鈥減roductive space altogether鈥 -- a place where he can balance homework, work, emails, and gym time all in one place. Learning this balance has aided Joe in staying motivated in school while keeping responsibilities that exceed his roles here. Furthermore, as a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he has adapted to the busy schedule and managed his time across multiple commitments.
Joe emphasizes that he felt most rewarded after programs when patrons share how much they鈥檝e enjoyed their experience. He is reassured that he made a positive impact and gave his best effort during each shift learning participants had a fulfilling and enjoyable time.
For new Adventure Center employees, Joe offers reassurance: the first day may feel overwhelming with all the fresh information, but most of that stress comes from uncertainty. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not as bad as it seems,鈥 he advises, 鈥淚n the end, you will be okay.鈥
During Joe鈥檚 interview that led to his current position, his manager, Chris Lukas, mentioned having lofty expectations of his employees. While that initially felt intimidating, once he met them, Joe set higher standards for himself and continued to push himself to grow.
