The Disability Studies and Community Inclusion graduate certificate prepares students to be leaders in promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life and across the lifespan. The focus is to understand the nature, meaning, health, social and political implications and consequences of disability within the context of a diverse and global world.

Following guidelines from the Society for Disability Studies, the certificate is interdisciplinary – challenges the view of disability as an individual defect that can be remedied through medical intervention and includes national and international perspectives, policies, literature, culture and history.

Admission Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
• Minimum 2.750 GPA on a 4.000-point scale
• Official transcript(s)
• Goal statement and professional objectives
• Two letters of recommendation
• English language proficiency - all international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions to waive) by earning one of the following:¹
  • Minimum 79 TOEFL iBT score
  • Minimum 6.5 IELTS score
  • Minimum 58 PTE score
  • Minimum 110 DET score

Graduates of this minor will be able to:

1. Apply the principles of inclusion of people with disabilities in community contexts from legal, theoretical, and best-practice perspectives.
2. Identify etiological, biological, psychological, and physiological aspects of various disabilities and characteristics of specific disabilities from a strengths-based approach.
3. Design, implement, and evaluate accommodations for people with disabilities to be included in community contexts using a strengths-based approach.
4. Fulfill organizational leadership roles to aid organizations.

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

To declare this minor, students must have attempted a minimum 12 credit hours at �Ը������� and earned a minimum 2.000 overall �Ը������� GPA. Students who have not attempted 12 credit hours at �Ը������� will be evaluated for admission based on their high school GPA for new students or transfer GPA for transfer students. Transfer students who have not attempted 12 credit hours of college-level coursework at �Ը������� and/or other institutions will be evaluated based on both their high school GPA and college GPA.

Full Description

The Ph.D. degree in Cultural Foundations engages students in analyzing the dynamic historical, social, cultural, economic and political contexts of education in and out of school from normative, interpretive and critical perspectives. Students also examine the philosophical, ethical, social and cultural dimensions of education and develop expertise in the range of social science and humanities-oriented research methods and modes of analysis in the field of social foundations of education.

Students in the doctoral program work closely with faculty to apply their learning to their areas of professional and personal interest, generating dissertation projects that make a contribution to original knowledge in the field as well as the intellectual and organizational aspects of their professions, organizations and communities.

• Goal statement that describes applicants' educational background, their motivation for pursuing a doctorate in the cultural foundations of education, how they learned about this program and how they think this program will help them pursue their goals
• Two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a former instructor if possible
• Writing sample (starting with spring 2027 admission term, writing sample is no longer required)
• Interview

Full Description

The Master of Education degree in Cultural Foundations engages students in the exploration of education through a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives from the humanities and social sciences. Students examine the social contexts of education with particular emphasis on structural inequities; issues of access and the distribution of educational opportunity; normative considerations about the purposes of education; and the transformative potential of education. Students learn to use these perspectives to identify problems of practice through their work as educators and leaders in communities, cultural organizations and educational organizations. To address these problems of practice, students learn to conduct community-engaged inquiry in partnership with stakeholders and communities.
