Director's Note | September 2022
As I watch the calendar turn to September, I鈥檓 finding it hard to believe that the Fall 2022 semester marks the start of my third year at 性福五月天 University. For the last two years, much of what we鈥檝e been doing at the School of Media and Journalism could be described as moving from one urgent issue to another. Speaking with colleagues in higher education around the country, I hear the same thing. There鈥檚 been little time to focus on anything more than just the day to day. To wit: Masks or no masks? Remote or in person? Events or no events? Regular seating or limited seating? Refreshments or no refreshments? The list goes on. And on. And on. Every little thing that used to be just part of the fabric of planning for a semester was held up for examination, debate and painfully slow decision making. Until now

Director's Note | June 2022
I鈥檓 writing this column from the lobby of a terminally hip hotel at Charles de Gaulle airport near Paris, eagerly awaiting the return of 14 CCI students who cheerfully embraced an unexpected opportunity to explore Paris on a warm, spring afternoon.
To quote The Princess Bride, 鈥淟et me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up.鈥 When offered the opportunity to accompany 14 CCI students en route to their three-week intersession course at 性福五月天鈥檚 campus in Florence, Italy, I jumped at it. Alas, like many of the best-laid travel plans, our group鈥檚 itinerary didn鈥檛 survive first contact with the realities of summer travel in Europe.
Our flight arrived late, we waited in an interminable queue to pass through security for our connecting flight, then waited some more in a hot and stuffy hall for immigration clearance. By the time we鈥檇 navigated all these formalities, our plane to Florence was well on its way 鈥 without us aboard.
After enduring more lines, tolerating some predictable 鈥 yet oddly endearing 鈥 French dismissiveness, and wiping the sweat off our brows in a waiting room that reserved all the cool air for those working behind plexiglass windows, we had a new plan in hand: Hotel rooms, meal vouchers and flights to Florence for the next day with the happy consequence of a day to explore in Paris.
